As you may already know, this incredibly hard substance is your enamel–the outer, protective layer of your teeth. But even though enamel is extremely hard, it can still be damaged or eaten away by plaque and tartar. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent enamel erosion.
Your enamel is usually worn down by acids—either intrinsically or extrinsically. You see, often your enamel will be worn down by gastric acids. Individuals typically suffer from this type of erosion if they have anorexia, acid reflux disease, or vomit frequently. Pregnant women often have to deal with this type of acid. Extrinsic acid is typically fueled by sugary foods and drinks.
There are a few signs of enamel erosion you can watch for. For instance, if your teeth look worn down or are discolored, you could be suffering from enamel erosion. The edges of your teeth may also seem transparent, or you may suddenly experience sensitive teeth.
Fortunately, your enamel can remineralize and build itself up, but there are things you may consider doing to help the process. For example, brushing with a fluoride based toothpaste twice a day and flossing should help. You should also remember to eat a healthy, well balanced diet and limit the amount of sweets you eat.
