The bone structure of your jaw serves many purposes. One of its primary purposes is to anchor your teeth and provide healthy structure to support your gums. The initial consultation with your oral surgeon usually involves a thorough inspection of your mouth as well as a series of X-rays or a CT scan. This helps them to understand how much available bone structure is left and make sure the surrounding teeth are healthy. This is also a good time to let them know about any medical conditions or medications you are taking.

The bone graft procedure usually requires deep sedation. This means you will need to have a friend or family member to drive you and help at home while you get back on your feet.

The grafted bone material can be taken from your chin or a surgical grade cadaver. Your oral surgeon will then create an incision in your gums to expose the jawbone. The new material is set into place and the gums are sutured closed. In time your body will naturally integrate the graft into your existing bone structure.
