How often do you reassess your dental care routine? When was the last time you changed your toothbrush?
It’s a fact of life that as we grow old, our bodies will need a bit more care than it did when we were younger. In fact, did you know that recent studies have shown that nearly 75% of Americans who are older than 35 have some form of gum disease? Sadly, gum disease can cause severe damage in your mouth—especially if it isn’t caught early.
As you may have heard, gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, typically caused by bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Sadly, if gum disease isn’t treated, it can lead to infections in your gums and bloodstream, and can lead to tooth loss.
Fortunately, there are a few ways you can recognize gum disease. For instance, if your gums bleed, are red or swollen, or if you notice consistent bad breath, a bad taste in your mouth, a receding gum line, or even shifting teeth, you may be dealing with gum disease.
Unfortunately, gum disease can be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, or poor nutrition. Fortunately, our dentist can examine the health of your teeth, and develop a plan to help you. Luckily, if you brush and floss well, you can stop bacteria from spreading and may be able to reverse gum disease. Similarly, antibiotics may be useful if your gum disease is severe enough.
