Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment consisting of clear plastic aligners that gradually reposition your teeth to straighten or correct common orthodontic issues. Unlike traditional metal braces, there is no metal cemented to your teeth, no wires, and no rubber bands applying pressure to your teeth.

Invisalign aligners are almost invisible. They are removable, making it easier to eat and clean your teeth than wearing metal braces.

What dental problems can Invisalign correct?

Invisalign aligners can treat almost all of the same orthodontic problems as traditional metal braces, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite

Invisalign is also a valid orthodontic treatment option if your teeth are straight but have large gaps or spaces between them that you want to reduce.

Can I get Invisalign?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign orthodontic treatment, Dr. Agarwal examines your teeth and overall oral health. She also asks about the cosmetic goals you’re trying to accomplish with Invisalign. Impressions help develop a customized treatment plan if you can benefit from Invisalign.

The treatment plan is sent to an Invisalign laboratory to create your first set of clear aligners. You switch to a new set of aligners every 2-3 weeks, slowly moving your teeth into position. While the aligners are removable, you should wear them for at least 20 hours each day, removing them only to eat and clean your teeth.

How do I take care of my Invisalign aligners?

Your Invisalign aligners must be clean to maintain good dental hygiene. Remove the aligners to eat and rinse them a few times per day with cool water. You should also brush them twice each day with toothpaste and a soft-bristle toothbrush, just as you do your teeth.

Don’t give up your dream of improving your smile and fixing orthodontic problems with your teeth just because you don’t want to wear traditional metal braces. The clear Invisalign aligners may provide the orthodontic treatment you need and in a shorter amount of time than standard braces.
